Gemini at Work 2026: What Google Cloud Announced About the Gemini Agent
What Google Cloud announced at Gemini at Work on Oct 8, 2026: the Gemini agent, skills, governance, cost controls, and private-preview status.
On October 8, 2026, Google Cloud used Gemini at Work to announce a single, universal agent for work. Thomas Kurian’s keynote describes one agent, one API, and one prompt box that takes objectives. This page is what was announced, including the private-preview status reported the same day.
This is an independent site, not an official Google page. The availability paragraph is a press report. Google has not published a GA date.
What Google says the agent does
The posts are Gemini at Work and Welcome to Gemini at Work 2026.
The agent answers questions, handles knowledge work, creates images and media, and writes and runs code. Google’s line is to give it objectives, not instructions. It plans the work, uses skills and tools, connects to business systems, and returns finished work in documents, the inbox, and developer environments. It chooses the best model for the job, with cost controls and enterprise security, administration, and governance.
Five days later, on October 13, Gemini 4 Argon became available on Google Cloud for frontier reasoning. Model ID and prices are in Gemini 4 Argon is now available.
Architectural principles
| Principle | What Google describes |
|---|---|
| Unified agent | Chat, autonomous objectives, and code. You assign work, schedule tasks, and the agent can respond to events. |
| Omnipresent access | Web, iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac. Also the command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Slack. Headless via API. |
| Persistent execution | Runs in the cloud with one memory and context. Work can continue for hours or days after you close the laptop. |
| Multi-agent orchestration | Temporary sub-agents, each with its own identity. Coworker agents are the persistent kind, described separately below. |
| Deeply contextual | Named as a principle, alongside the memory, skills, and tools in the next section. |
| Model choice | Gemini family models and Anthropic Claude models today. Other models later. |
Coworker agents have a persistent role, their own @agents.company.com email, their own storage, and only the context you share. Temporary sub-agents have their own identity. Google does not describe a company mailbox for them.
Skills, tools, and memory
Tools. The registry named in the keynote: Confluence, Microsoft Office, Teams, Slack, Workspace, Git, Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake, desktop files, and any MCP server.
Skills. Reusable modular prompts, in three layers: a global library, a company registry, and personal skills. That is the Cloud agent’s registry. Skills in the Gemini app and Workspace are a separate rollout, with an October 13 delay, covered in Skills replace Gems. These posts do not say the two catalogs are the same.
Memory. Four types: session, semantic, procedural, and episodic.
Inside Google Workspace
Google says the agent works inline in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat, and Calendar.
| Mode | What Google says happens |
|---|---|
| Personal assistance | The agent helps you in those apps. |
| Proactive delegation | Workspace Intelligence suggests tasks you can delegate. |
| Member of the team | A coworker agent gets its own Workspace account: email, calendar, Drive, and directory presence. You @mention it. It appears under its own name in version history. |
The third mode is the one to review before a pilot. Google says the agent has its own account and its own name in version history, and that it only receives context you share.
Data work and industry packs
For data and ML engineers, Google describes ML skills for PySpark and notebooks. Operational reporting skills use BigQuery and Knowledge Catalog. Saved reports in that setup run without token costs. The same section names Knowledge Catalog, Smart Storage, and Borderless Lakehouse.
| Pack | Status Google gives | What is named |
|---|---|---|
| Financial Services | Preview | 50+ foundational skills. Data from FactSet, LSEG, S&P Global, and SEC filings. |
| Legal | Preview | Named as a preview specialization. |
| Government, Healthcare, Retail | Coming soon | No dates in the announcement. |
Governance and cost controls
Governance, as listed: a cryptographically attested identity per agent, least privilege, OAuth propagation, an audit trail attributed to the agent, Agent Sandbox, and Agent Gateway (an AI network firewall that enforces policy).
Cost controls, as listed: multi-model orchestration, Smart Routing, and real-time spend caps in the Cloud Billing Console. The agent pauses when a cap is hit and resumes with one click. Chargeback is per project.
Google claims per-token prices are down 98% since 2024, and that TPU 8i has 80% better price-performance than the prior generation. Scale claims from the same event, again per Google: nearly 500 Google Cloud customers each processed more than 1 trillion tokens in the last year; nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers use its AI products; nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise.
The cap is specific enough to test. Set a project cap, confirm the agent stops, then confirm the one-click resume, before you let a scheduled task run for days.
Availability
9to5Google’s October 8 report says the agent is in private preview. Wide availability is “soon” for Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans. In Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Chat you can mention @Gemini.
Google has not published a GA date. The report’s @Gemini list is five apps. Google’s own inline list also includes Drive and Calendar. Treat @Gemini as what the report says is in the preview.
What teams should do now
Our advice while the product is in private preview:
- Keep a company-wide cutover off the calendar until there is a GA date or a written preview agreement. “Soon” is the report’s word.
- Write the first pilot as an objective with a finished artifact, matching Google’s briefing line.
- Match systems to the tools registry before you promise a connector. MCP is the path Google names for anything not on the list.
- Decide which jobs are a coworker agent (own account, own mail, its own name in version history) and which are a temporary sub-agent.
- Track Gemini app and Workspace skills on their own timeline. Do not assume the Cloud registry copies into that rollout.
- Once you have console access, set a spend cap and test pause and one-click resume.
- If you need the frontier reasoning model itself, call Argon. It has been on Google Cloud since October 13. The agent chooses a model; Argon is the post for when you want that model ID.
- Financial services and legal are the preview packs. Government, healthcare, and retail are “coming soon,” with no dates.
