OpenDesign Motion: Free Open-Source Claude Motion Alternative
OpenDesign Motion is a free open-source Claude Motion alternative. Setup for this open source motion design tool, plus how it compares with Gemini Omni.
OpenDesign Motion shipped on October 15, 2026 in OpenDesign v0.25.0. The codename on that release is OpenDesign Motion. The headline calls it the open-source alternative to Claude Motion.
This is an independent site. We are not affiliated with OpenDesign, Anthropic, or Google.
The code is in the open-design repo. The release counts 53 PRs, 16 contributors, and 21 days. The line under that count is turn ideas into videos with code.
What OpenDesign Motion is
OpenDesign Motion is open source motion design built as code. OpenDesign is licensed under Apache 2.0. The release positions it as an open-source Claude Motion alternative. It is not a text-to-video model.
A coding agent writes HTML, CSS, and GSAP. HyperFrames renders that page to a deterministic MP4 with headless Chrome and FFmpeg. HyperFrames is HeyGen’s open-source, agent-native video framework, integrated as a first-class citizen in OpenDesign. The framework license is Apache-2.0. The README marks the catalog thumbnails as © HeyGen.
The v0.25.0 notes say to start from five bundled examples, create an editable animation, and export an MP4. Ask for a video and the result is editable source files and an MP4. Interactive animations stay runnable HTML. Sound stops when you leave the active preview. The five examples are Motion Future, Product Promo, Showreel, UI Morph, and Visual Lesson. Video export checks that the MP4 can play, and a failed export keeps the editable source.
The same release says this version makes editing, previews, and continuing work across devices smoother.
The README says 11 HyperFrames templates and 39 Seedance prompts ship with the repo. The README points the OpenDesign render workflow (composition cache, sandbox-exec workaround, and MP4-as-chip) at design-templates/hyperframes/ in the repo.
The README also says you can pair HyperFrames with other generators. Seedance 2.0 is named for cinematic text-to-video and image-to-video. Veo 3, Sora 2, and Kling 2 are named as routed model variants. Suno v5 and Lyria 2 are named for the audio layer. That pairing is a second path. The Motion render itself is still the HTML animation turned into an MP4.
OpenDesign does not ship an agent. The README says the design engine is the claude, codex, cursor-agent, copilot, hermes, or kimi binary already on your PATH. Swap with one click.
The app itself is open source. It does not bundle a model, so model costs depend on the agent or API key you bring.
On October 17, 2026, eogee.com reported that the OpenDesign launch team said the launch demo video was made with DeepSeek V4.1 Flash inside OpenDesign. That is the vendor’s claim. The note includes no independent benchmark.
How to install OpenDesign
The steps below are the install paths in the OpenDesign README. The command blocks are copied from that file.
Desktop app
The README calls the desktop app the fastest path. It needs no Node, no pnpm, and no clone.
| System | Where the README says to get it |
|---|---|
| macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel x64) | open-design.ai or GitHub Releases |
| Windows (x64) | open-design.ai or GitHub Releases |
| Linux | No prebuilt Linux artifact is in the official releases. Run OpenDesign from source. Linux release work is tracked in #4368. |
After install, the app auto-detects every coding-agent CLI on your PATH. It loads 100+ functional skills, the separate rendering-template catalog, and 151 design systems. You type a brief in the entry view.
Projects can run locally or in your own deployment. Cloud model requests and OpenDesign Cloud requests go to those services.
Install into a coding agent
You can use OpenDesign without the GUI. Call it as a skill, plugin, or MCP server inside Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, OpenClaw, Antigravity, Hermes, Kimi, and more.
/usr/bin/od can shadow OpenDesign’s od. If you installed the macOS app from the DMG or the Homebrew cask, the shell may still resolve od to Apple’s /usr/bin/od octal-dump utility. Open Settings → MCP server in the desktop app and copy the client-specific snippet. That snippet uses absolute paths and does not rely on the bare od command. WSL2 users should follow docs/wsl-setup.md in the repo first.
install.sh is a thin shell wrapper around od mcp install. It exists so the hosted URL returns shell instead of the landing-page HTML fallback, and it fails fast if your shell resolves a non-Open-Design od binary.
# One-line install into the agent you're using:
od mcp install <agent>
# <agent> = claude | codex | reasonix | raven | cursor | copilot | openclaw
# | antigravity | pi | vibe | hermes | cline | kimi | kiro
# | trae | opencode
# Hosted equivalent for curl-based setup:
curl -fsSL https://open-design.ai/install.sh | sh -s <agent>
Then, inside the agent:
> Use open-design to generate a landing page with the Linear design system
In a filesystem-backed local CLI run, the agent composes the selected functional skill or design template with your DESIGN.md, writes the canonical project files, and OpenDesign previews those files. A BYOK or plain-API run without filesystem tools returns one complete <artifact> block.
Docker
git clone https://github.com/nexu-io/open-design.git
cd open-design/deploy
cp .env.example .env
echo "OD_API_TOKEN=$(openssl rand -hex 32)" >> .env
docker compose up -d
# open http://127.0.0.1:7456
If the browser asks for credentials, use open-design as the username and the OD_API_TOKEN value from deploy/.env as the password. That keeps Docker bridge traffic authenticated without host networking. API clients can keep using Authorization: Bearer <OD_API_TOKEN>.
Run from source
git clone https://github.com/nexu-io/open-design.git
cd open-design
corepack enable && pnpm install
pnpm tools-dev run web
Open the URL printed by tools-dev. Development ports are allocated dynamically unless you pass explicit port flags.
Use Node ~24 and pnpm 10.33.x. WSL2 notes are in docs/wsl-setup.md. Native Windows notes are in docs/windows-troubleshooting.md. The full quickstart, env vars, and packaged build flow are in QUICKSTART.md. Those files are in the repo.
How to start Motion
The v0.25.0 notes give this path. Open Motion Design on Home or Community. Choose one of the five bundled examples. Use the motion skills from the @ picker. Ask for a video. You get editable source files and an MP4. Interactive animations remain runnable HTML. Sound stops when you leave the active preview.
OpenDesign Motion vs Claude Motion vs Gemini Omni
The rows below use the v0.25.0 release, the OpenDesign README, Anthropic’s October 8, 2026 article, the Claude Motion help center, and this site’s page on what Gemini Omni is.
Claude Motion is in beta on Team and Enterprise. The help center says it is on by default on Team. On Enterprise it stays off until an owner turns it on in Organization settings > Artifacts. The Anthropic article tells Enterprise admins to use that same switch for Dashboards and Motion.
Claude writes code that animates text, charts, shapes, and images. You can change any word, number, or timing. You can adjust the piece in the editor, or ask Claude to change it, then download an MP4. The help center says the animation is an artifact built from the Motion template. It is saved in the Artifacts tab. Export with Export > MP4. It is private by default. Share to share it. Usage counts toward plan usage limits. Longer or more complex animations use more.
The article’s examples are a quarterly report turned into a 30-second explainer for an all-hands, motion on a chart in a board deck, and a product walkthrough for customer onboarding. Those lines are examples in the article. Maximum duration, resolution, and frame rate are not published. Anthropic says Claude Motion does not use a video generation model. There is no generated footage and no AI-generated people. Anthropic lists a handoff to Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI, or Runway, with Canva and Captions coming soon.
Gemini Omni is the generative model Google unveiled at I/O 2026 on May 19. It creates video from text, image, audio, or video input, with native synced audio. The first release is Gemini Omni Flash. It generates actual footage. OpenDesign Motion and Claude Motion render code-based animations. Omni is bundled into Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra.

A cell says Not published when these sources do not state that fact.
When to use which
- Use OpenDesign Motion for open source motion design you can edit as HTML, CSS, and GSAP, then export as an MP4. The desktop app covers macOS and Windows. Linux runs from source. You bring a coding agent that is already on your
PATH, or you install OpenDesign into one. - Use Claude Motion on a Claude Team or Enterprise plan when you want a beta animation of text, charts, shapes, and images inside Claude. Team has it on by default. An Enterprise owner turns it on under Organization settings > Artifacts. Start with Anthropic’s article and the help center.
- Use Gemini Omni when you want generated footage and native synced audio. What Gemini Omni is covers that model. Draft Gemini Omni footage prompts, or Seedance and Veo prompts for the OpenDesign pairing path, in the prompt generator.
